Theory Identification and Rationale: Roy’s Theory
A grand nursing theory can be defined as a systematic composition of the nature of nursing the clearly states the mission and goals of nursing care. Grand nurse theories are categorized into four broad categories namely: outcomes theories, caring theories, interaction theories and needs theories (Butts, Bandhauer, & Rich, 2013). In this paper, I will discuss one of the outcomes theory postulated by Sister Callista Roy and briefly review the purpose of the theory and offer a rationale to the theory.
Callista Roy believes that nursing as an integrated system of knowledge grounded on the theory that sights a sick or potentially sick person as a biopsychosocial being. He explains that clients acclimatize to the modification or changes in their surroundings. Therefore, as nurses, we offer care through the nursing process to foster them adapt to a state of well-being. She further explains that for nurses must guarantee the patient an effective coping mechanism and response to circumvent in the integrity of the patient. The most significant purpose of Roy’s theory is to promote patient’s adaptation through interventions such as counseling, health education, sustenance and care, communication, and by identifying resources for them. Roy adaptation model states the through this adaptation the patient is freed so that he or she can respond to other stimuli that may be present in the environment (Meleis, 2011, p. 494). From my perception of Roy’s literature, she believes that nursing focus in client’s stimuli and the outcome that stimuli has on them for adjustment. Therefore, to treat a patient, nurses must manipulate the stimuli (contextual, focal or residual) through positive coping (Meleis, 2011, pp. 169-172).
This theory is very easy to incorporate into patient care as adaptation
is vital to all the life processes. As nurses,
we do help our patients to cope up with their health status and can back them
to gain the opportunity to care for themselves self-sufficiently. As a general
nurse, in obstetrics parents must adapt to partaking and take care of a new-born infant. The mother has
been through months of adapting to pregnancy, and promptly she must accept the
new role that at times is confusing and scary (Medeiros, et al., 2015). As a nurse, I am obligated to ensure that they are
fully prepared and become accustomed to this change erstwhile to discharge.
Therefore, as nurses, we are supposed to
help patients adapt to the new environment as a method to treat the patient
fully.
