Class Test
Answer two questions; one from Section One and one from section Two
The answers are to be no more than 500 words each, and as close to that mark as possible.
SECTION ONE (Answer only one question)
- Sporting events are little more than exercises in product placement and stadiums and other event locations are designed to transform fans into consumers. From your observations of a sporting event is this a true reflection of the contemporary sporting experience?
- ‘Sports marketers are more important than the athletes and players. Indeed players and athletes come and go, but sports marketers live on.’ Do you agree and in what ways have marketers shaped the production and consumption of world sport – if at all?
- We now go to sporting events to watch the game on a big or small screen, but it makes good business sense for clubs and franchises, sponsors and the corporates, and fans just love it. Everyone’s a winner in today’s modern sporting environment – or are they? Discuss
SECTION TWO (Answer only one question)
- How important are foundation myths in sport?
- What will the global football (soccer) market look like in twenty years?
- Those wanting gender equity in sport miss the point. It’s not about more and better paid women on the sporting field, but about more women in sporting boardrooms and the media. Discuss
- The impact of terrorism on global sport business is over rated. The greater threat is corruption and resources should be diverted from over-expensive anti-terrorism measures to protecting sports integrity. Do you agree and why?
- David Beckham was an above average footballer and Sachin Tendulkar a great player, but nothing out of the ordinary in terms of greatness. They’re no Bradman or Pele. Yet they may be far more significant global and sporting figures. Do you agree and in what ways are they more or less significant?
- From the Gulf States to Shanghai, Asia is becoming the new powerhouse in world sport and Australia has jumped on board. Do you agree and why?
- North America has been as equally important as Britain in the spread of sport, and ways in which it is administered and mediatised. Do you agree?
- Which two figures have been the most influential in shaping modern global sports business and why?
