Nurse Leadership and Management: Leadership and Management in Healthcare
The nurse leadership and management class are composed of double 2-hour sessions that will be presented at the Grand Canyon University Lecture Hall 4. It will be facilitated by the Grand Canyon University (College of Nursing and Health Care Professionals) and the Association of periOperetive Registered Nurse(AORN)- Centre for Nursing Leadership Institute on April 4th, 2017. The AORN- Centre for Nursing Leadership is an organization that supports the need for a sustained professional development in managing the corporate side of the peri-operative services for Registered Nurses(AORN, 2017). The Grand Canyon University; School of Nursing is focused on delivering the best educational resources, guidance, and knowledge for student nurses across the world so that they can become competent nurses in future(Grand Canyon University, 2017).
Needs Assessment
Within the frameworks of healthcare, RNs have the need to lead and manage their workplace to deliver quality care delivery which is cost-effective and creates a focality to ensuring better patient outcomes. As such, the graduate nurses need to comprehend, relate, discuss and analysis how leadership styles and theories are imperative in their day-to-day delivery of care. Furthermore, it is required of RNs to practice the full extent of their training and education as they partner with other healthcare professionals in redesigning medical/health care in the US.
According to Sherman and Pross (2010), budding future nursing leaders is perceived as a “long-term quest, ” and as such he articulates that a “healthy work environment” requires nurse leaders who support its importance, realistically animate it, and engross supplementary professionals in its achievement. Additionally, Weng, Huang, Chen, and Chang (2015) suggests that leaders can create an effective organizational culture through an engagement with the staff in developing shared values in their work. As such, healthcare organizations that depict effective leadership skills within their systems relates to better service delivery than organizations that have erratic leadership styles(Weng et al., 2015). Furthermore, new organizations must realize the need to integrate leadership and management skills to create trust among patients and offer standardized care similar to other prominent healthcare institutions(Chappell & Richards, 2015).
Class Description
This class will translate and integrate leadership and management theories to healthcare management as well as depict how leadership and management skills can be applied in a health institution. The sessions will offer educational, experiential, discussion, analysis and interpretational learning opportunities for graduate nurses to acquire insight, skills, and knowledge into the application of leadership and management skills in patient care and healthcare organizational systems. At the end of the two sessions, graduate nurses will be able to understand the need for leadership and management skills in healthcare and be able to apply this knowledge to practice. The sessions will be presented by three prominent nurse leadership educators and speakers:
