Assignment 4: Technology and Nursing Education
As the technological world thrives with new equipment and methods of instruction, nursing as s discipline embraces these technological developments in its curricula. This paper transcends an analysis of how the demands of the nursing education differ with technologies. Additionally, the paper will review the how reality, real life scenarios can provide optimal education as well as how they can be applied to increase patient, practitioner and hospital safety.
Case Synopsis:
The case depicts a nurse, Victoria, who is at crossroads as to whether to practice her profession in a rural setting or an urban center. She wonders of the differences in demands and technology differ between the two settings. Additionally, she explores the education scenarios between the two settings regarding computer-based virtual reality, simulations and real life(McGonigles & Mastrian, 2008).
Question 1
According to Axley (2008), the use of technology in nursing curricula has changed the strategies and has challenged the nurse educators towards their needs from time immemorial. As such, in a rural setting, there is less demand for care as compared to the urban setting. This is attributed to the available technologies in urban areas that have enabled students to learn through technologies such as the Internet. Research suggest, over the last 14 years the number of internet users has increased by 117 %(Wolf & Morouse, 2015). Additionally, 72 percent of individuals in urban centers seek online databases for information. Rural areas tend to rely on the traditional method of teaching and as such less technological use is required.
Question 2
According to Wolf and Morouse (2015), nurse education needs a resetting through the incorporation of new technologies such as using Web 2.0 and blogs that offer information to nursing across the globe. As such, Victoria would find it difficult to access evidence-based literature that is imperative in her practice in a rural setting. Alternatively, in an urban center, the availability of the internet, as well as equipment that are essential in nursing education, are available. The new technology of wireless connections will also enable her access internet at her convenience(Wahl & Latayan, 2011). Therefore, the use of virtual reality and simulation will give the nurse confidence in dealing with patients which in turn improves patient outcome.

Lastly, as
mentioned earlier, the use of Web 2.0 and
blogs as well as online journal databases are just but a few ways of
integrating technology into the nursing school curriculum. To integrate
simulations, virtual reality, and real-life scenarios with nursing education,
firms that offer these technologies collaborate with institutions(Kardong-Edgren, Adamson, & Fitzgerald, 2010) to provide these services. As such, issues of consistency is
imperative to achieve the best and bring out fresh graduates who can provide
care for the better patient outcome.
