The Five-Component Model
Information systems, or management information systems are a type of system. This essentially implies that they comprise a set of components which interact to attain a certain outcome. Stair and Reynolds, (2012) view information systems as an assortment of elements for the collection and manipulation of data, and it’s the consequent dissemination of information. There are five components of an information management system, which comprise a computer side, and a human side. The computer part of information systems comprises hardware and software. Hardware refers to the physical components of a computer, which are essentially equipment for processing data. Software, on its part, refers to a set of instructions for the computer, which are used to convert data into information.
On the human side, the first component is people, who are the users of the information system, and its most important component. People are guided by procedures, which are essentially methodical instructions that provide guidance on how the user should interact with the hardware/software. The final component is data, which refers to raw and unprocessed facts. Data acts as the bridge between the computer components and the human components of the information system.
The five components above comprise the
five-component framework of information system. This framework is an important
and useful one in the use, evaluation and interaction with information systems.
One can use the five-component framework by understanding its core working,
which is essentially as has been described above, whereby data acts as the link
between the computer side and the human side. An automation process essentially
entails taking what people are doing and transferring these functions and
activities to the computer side of the framework. By using the five-component
model, one can design information systems that are more responsive to the needs
of the users.
