Solution
Describe four reasons why the public calls the police in situations not involving a crime
One of the reasons why the public calls the police in situations that do not involve a crime is so as to ensure maintenance of a certain social boundary (Walker & Katz, 2012). Case in point, a citizen may call the police in order for them to get rid of persons who do not belong to a given setting such as vagrants or loitering individuals. On the other hand, the police may be called to relieve situations that are deemed unpleasant. Such situations ma include excessive noise coming from the neighbor’s house, disputes among members of the family, and arguments between individuals. Individuals involved in such situations tend to be highly responsive to the presence of police officers and are more likely to obey what they are asked to do. Thirdly, the police may be called for by the public to direct attention away from caller-counterpunching (Walker & Katz, 2012). Lastly, citizens may call the police to ask for emergency services in cases such as medical crises, missing children, and suicide attempts, among others.
Identify the sort of behaviors that might not be considered a crime, yet result in the police being called frequently.
Intoxication is not a crime in itself but may result in police being called, especially in cases where the intoxicated individual is presumed to disturb the peace of others (Dempsey & Forst, 2015). Another non-criminal behavior that may result in the police being called is aimless loitering. It may is not a crime to pass through a neighborhood as one loiters or strolls, but residents may call the police especially if the loiterer looks suspicious. Playing of loud music in the neighborhood, which is considered as disturbing the peace of other persons, may result into the police being called to restore order, in as much as it is not a crime for anyone to play music at the volume they deem pleasant to them. Family feuds and arguments between different individuals in the community may also lead to the police being called, especially in cases where such arguments are considered to be disturbing to peace (Walker & Katz, 2012).
Explain the difference between streetwalkers and call girls, and discuss how each might have an impact on order maintenance and peacekeeping, and what that impact might be.
Both streetwalkers and call girls are prostitutes. However, call girls are not seen by the general public and can only be reached by interested parties through mail or phone (Hess, Orthmann, & Cho, 2013). On the other hand, streetwalkers walk on the open streets and are easily accessible as they are seen by the general public (Walker & Katz, 2012). When considering order maintenance and peacekeeping, both streetwalkers and call girls remain highly dangerous to societal values. The streetwalkers are of more concern since they are exposed on the streets. This category are highly vulnerable to violence and may encourage criminal activities such as the use of drugs and murder. On the other hand, as much as call girls raise equal concerns, they are, in most cases, managed by brothels and hence protected from violence (Walker & Katz, 2012). However, considering the questions that the subject of prostitution raises, the effect of streetwalkers and call girls to the society is eminent.
Which would have a larger impact on public expectations of the police, and why?
When it comes to public expectations of the police the call girls have a lesser impact as they hidden from the public and hence not easily accessible, with one of the reasons from their lesser impact being that their vulnerability to violence is low (Hess, Orthmann, & Cho, 2013). As such, only those persons who want the services of the call girls call them and their transactions occur behind the vicinity, an aspect that is welcomed by some of the public. Nevertheless, the public expectations of the police when it comes to streetwalkers are high as such individuals are exposed on the streets and are a likely contribution to criminal activities in the society (Walker & Katz, 2012). In addition, issues of ethicality and morality are also raised as such streetwalkers can be accessed by teenagers. In addition, some of the persons who use them fail to pay for their services, an aspect that creates a nuisance in the community.
Which would seem to have the potential for adding to the crime problem, and why?
The streetwalkers seem to have more potential to add
to the crime problem as they are exposed on the streets where most of the crime
is conducted and individuals visit with different intentions. Since they are
unprotected on the streets, such parties are exposed to violent crimes such as
robbery, rape, and even murder in worst cases.
