Introduction of creative industries and the economy.
Creative industries have increasingly been embraced as not only major contributors to the economies of various countries across the globe, but also as avenues through which culture can be conserved and used to create societal; cohesiveness and harmony. This paper reviews the definition of creative industries, and their importance to both the society and the economy.
Creative Industries
Creative industries are all the economic activities involving exploitation of information and knowledge (O’Connor & Gu, 2014). In some countries, they are referred to as the creative economy or cultural economy. These industries depend on the knowledge and expertise of individuals as defined by a certain cultural construct, and hence bank on the aspect of culture such as art and craft to generate income (Moyon & Lecocq, 2014). In addition, they also rely on the natural skills and talents of individuals such as music, dance, performance arts, sporting activities, among others, to attract income.
The creative industry is of great importance to the society in terms of promoting togetherness. As such, creative industries allow different countries to develop a stronger national identity (Daniel, 2014). By individuals constantly relating to their culture and origin, and every aspect that defines their national culture, they develop a stronger identify both among themselves and to the rest of the world. Case in point, ballerina dances are highly associated with their Italian origin and the music tells more about the creativeness of Italians. The embracing of national culture promotes cohesiveness among members of the society allowing for integrated development. In addition, creative industries facilitate the creation and sharing of knowledge, an aspect that promotes societal knowledge and contributes to development (Lee & Drever, 2013).
Creative industries have also proven to be of great importance to the economy of different countries and societies. One of the most important contributions of creative industries to the economy is that they lead to creation of job opportunities even as individuals use their skills and cultural exposures to come up with income generating activates (Potts, 2011). Case in point, an artist exhibits and sales his works of art to earn income. This has greatly helped most countries to reduce the burden of employment. In addition, creative industries contribute to the economy as they generate revenue (Flew, 2011).
Most governments have established measures that facilitate increased entry of individuals into the creative industries, promoting an increase in revenue from the sector even as they largely contribute to the GDP of different nations. Creative industries are also a source of innovation as new information is generated and shared (Lazzeretti, 2013). Individuals use such information to come up with new activities that can be exploited for economic purposes.
Conclusion
It is evident that creative industries promote the
long-term development of both the social and economic sectors of the community.
As such, it is important for all persons involved, including the government and
private sector, to come up with initiatives that will promote an increase in
the growth of creative industries for the sake of creating both economic and
social wealth.
