Al Gore’s documentary about global warming, “An Inconvenient Truth,” uses a combination of logos, ethos, and pathos. As the text states in “Use All Three General Kinds of Support”: “Your strongest essays will include combinations of all three types of support.” Doing so allows Gore to draw in his audience, relate to them, create camaraderie, and then ease them into nodding in agreement with him. Imagine you’re taking the global warming issue to a local level and are pitching to your school that it use green materials in constructing its next building. Write a 300-word letter to your school board that uses all three types of support.

RE: THE CASE FOR INVESTING IN GREEN CONSTRUCTION
As an institution of higher learning, the school should be at the forefront in the fight against global warming. In light of this, the institution should make deliberate efforts set a positive example to its various stakeholders including students, parents and other members of the community. Going green will not only encourage these stakeholders to follow suite but also promote a culture of environmental conservation among the student fraternity, which constitutes the leaders of tomorrow. Pursuing green initiatives will therefore both promote environmental conservation now and contribute to a greener tomorrow. In the spirit of fighting environmental degradation, the school should use green materials in constructing its next building.
While green building is a relatively sophisticated development trend, it is a construction approach that is consistent with the demands of its time, whose relevance and significance cannot be overemphasized. Green building is associated with numerous benefits that can be categorized as either environmental, economic or social. The environmental benefits, which are perhaps the main reason why most individuals and organizations pursue green construction include the reduction of emissions, water conservation, storm-water management, temperature moderation and waste reduction. However, as it turns out, sustainable building is also associated with several economic benefits, which might in the long-run, justify the initial and operating costs incurred in the endeavor. Such benefits include, water and energy savings, increased property values, a decreased strain on infrastructure, improved employee attendance and productivity, increased sales volume and the development of a local talent pool. Finally, the social benefits include improved health, improved schools, healthier lifestyles and recreation.
On the bottom line, it is evident
that apart from the environmental benefits associated with green construction,
this initiative will also result in several economic and social benefits. As
such, the school should definitely invest in green construction.
