Summary
The researchers in this article articulated that Opioid Maintenance Treatment (OMT), as crime control tool, is effective but some individuals commit vehement criminal activities, yet they are on OMT. As such, the article focused on generating a subtle knowledge of the role of substances in individuals on OMT therapy to commit vicious crimes, immoral values as well as post-crime processing of the individuals’ moral contraventions. In the study, 28-item semi-structured questionnaires, in audio form, were used on 12 individuals on an OMT who were enrolled as prisoners. As an exploratory study, thematic evaluation was conducted with an interactive and reflexive method. Findings suggest that substances that contained benzodiazepines had the ability to transgress an individual’s moral codes, as well as one, could perform non-violent and vehement crimes primarily to support the expensive use of heroin. Conclusively, substances are utilized to transgress moral standards erstwhile to committing and neutralizing the shame and guilt that an individual experienced after taking part in criminal activity.
Analysis
As a qualitative paper, the paper utilized a 28-item semi-structured questionnaire on 12 OMT prisoners. The research ethics were observed as the participants operated conferring to the moral codes which are parallel to the morality obligations found in mainstream society. Additionally, the study had limitations as the participants’ sample was decidedly selective to on 12 prisoners which render the study to be restrictive hence it cannot be generalized regarding statistical arena. Also, since the interviews were carried out at the prison, fostered by a mental care practitioner, the participants’ retroactive reflections, decisions and experience sharing were influenced significantly. As such, the study acted as an encouragement since it provided participants with a positive self-representation contrary to their prison perspective. Furthermore, the confidentiality of the study was controversial since it tagged the participants in the study with their names such as there is a naming of Paul- a participant.
Application
As the researchers suggest in the article, the
study can be applied when administering care to
prisoners. As such, care providers must be able to identify historical data of fervent
behaviors in prisoners as well as explore their palpable violent crimes’
episodes and emotional reactions. Also,
since the study reveals there is a potentiality of substance use relating to
violent crimes. As such, the study can be
used as a tool to predict violent behavior in individuals who are under
OMT therapy. Additionally, care practitioner should liaise with the law
enforcement at the prisons to guide them
on how to deal with prisoners who are under OMT treatment. A benzodiazepine substance can be an effective
in restoring the moral behaviors in prisoners. As such, this will lead to a
reduction of crime rates in the contemporary prisons.
