Solution
Business Process Management
Business process management has been touted as the next big thing in business. It is a process that combines information technology with management science knowledge (van der Aalst, 2013). This combination of knowledge is then applied to operational business processes. Many businesses today are seeking to apply business management processes in their operations. It has been derived from workflow management (WFM). Unlike WFM, however, BPM has a much broader scope. WFM essentially deals with the automation of business processes. Business process management therefore has the incorporation of information technology as its essence. Jeston and Nelis (2014), however, contend that it is not information technology that comprises the essence of business process management. Rather, they argue that business process management is a management discipline, whose focus is on the use of business processes to achieve an organization’s objective. The process is achieved through the improvement, ongoing performance management, and by governing essential business processes. Van der Aalst (2013) corroborates this position by indicating that business process management does not necessarily have to improve business process through the use of technology.
While BPM does not necessarily have to
use technology, it is nonetheless often associated with a number of software
systems. These software are used to support and control operational processes.
It has been noted that BPM is an extension to workflow management. BPM extends
on WFM by giving a greater consideration to human factors and management
support. An example of a BPM is process mining, which is used to discover and
analyze emerging processes.
