DNP ADMISSION ESSAY
I have passion of studying DNP because of various reasons. Nursing has been my passion, thus, I can even better it further by equipping myself with the most professional knowledge it requires. I am looking forward to affect changes both for patients and the entire system of healthcare in the actual setting of a clinic through DNP program. I understand my preference of selecting to study DNP; it’s because i wanted a clinical doctorate but not a research doctorate. For me to comfortably continue nursing profession along my set career trajectory, this terminal degree is of much relevance. For me to continue being of relevance in nursing academia this degree is also equally important (American Association of Colleges of Nursing, 2006).Thus, DNP is a tool to my nursing profession as it will give me a unique position of affecting significant practical changes in the delivery of healthcare. I am seeking this highest nursing academic degree because it will offer me an alternative to those doctorate programs which are research based. The knowledge and skills obtained from studying this degree will enable me to put in practice the science that has been developed by other researchers who pursued nursing at PhD level, DNSC level and other research based doctorates related to nursing. For a research to be developed it will take at least 15 years, but the virtue of being DNP holder will enable me to shorten this waiting period by bringing such evidence based practices to patients within a short period of time (American Association of Colleges of Nursing, 2006).
My main motivator for studying DNP is change. Through the knowledge and skills that I’m going to gain, DNP will enhance my mentoring of other NPs to assume great practices as well as well as leadership responsibilities in organizations that offer healthcare services, mentoring other NPs in evaluating and applying beneficial research, and ultimately mentoring them on how to promote a better healthcare system that is effective and efficient. I want to ensure that the delivery and care of NPs is as effective as that of a physician. DNP will enhance my critical thinking on problems most encountered in nursing and in educational setting and eventually coming up with lasting solutions (American Association of Colleges of Nursing, 2006).
Based on the two essentials of engaging in practice informed research and research informed practice, I envision my practice changing after going through DNP program which will equip me with knowledge and skills that will eventually prepare me either for clinical or leadership role (American Association of Colleges of Nursing, 2006). My focus will always be patients together with their families. We are not giving our patients and their families the most up to date care available. To give them the best care, DNP knowledge will enable me to evaluate ethical and professional behavior towards individual patients, their families, groups, organizations and communities.
This describes my vision of transforming healthcare delivery system. Quality and up to date care is key in health care but it needs an individual as well as a collective responsibility. The program will give me a place in nursing academia. For evidence based practice to be implemented in a proper way the nursing system of education should also be looked at; change should start from the education system up to the entire NP in the field. My vision will only come true after studying and excelling the DNP program.
