Drugs’ value In America v. Other Countries
Research shows that Americans spend more money on drugs than other countries globally. Consequently, Congress is pushing for policies that will reduce these prices to favor the patients and save taxpayer money. However, formulating these policies will have negative consequences on the sick patients, the elderly and discourage investors from investing in the drug industry (Howard, 2015).
Reduced drug costs have a negative impact on the innovation process of medicines (Nordrum, 2015). Investors will not invest in a field that does not provide good returns and profit. Regulatory policies will impact negatively on the companies that want to introduce new drugs but lack capital. It will also reduce the morale of pharmacists to generate new ideas for drugs aimed at curbing stubborn diseases. As a result, the pharmaceutical field will lack the equipment and expertise to cure current diseases and prevent future ones.
The sick will also suffer thereby increasing their mortality rate. Seniors will lack the drugs that assist them in some of the ailments that develop in later stages of human development. Therefore, reducing medicinal costs may save money presently at the expense of future generations and the life of chronically ill people. Moreover, America’s high medicine prices assist in reducing drug research globally (Kliff, 2016). New drugs have resulted from this investigation and innovation, which have cured conditions that were regarded fatal in the past. Curtailing this process will not only affect Americans but also citizens in the world.
In conclusion, people should
forecast and make decisions that benefit the sick and elderly, save lives and
encourage innovation in the pharmaceutical world. Introducing policies that
reduce drug costs will result in more harm than the intended benefits.
