Listening skills
Instructions:-
Prepare a listening exercise to train extensive listening skills then move on to develop intensive listening skills.
1Record the news from the radio OR As a poadcast from a website. You need a 2-3 min bulletin with at least 8different news items. Make a written transcript of the broadcast.
2 Make a list of at least 12 topics areas such as ‘politics’,’sport’, ‘famous personalities ‘ etc.
3 Set a prequestion for your students,to prepare them.
4 For the first listening, your students will have to identify which of the 12 topics are mentioned and which are not. It is therefore important to have some distractors in your list. To make it more challenging ask students to number them in order in which they are mentioned.
5 For second listening you could use a range of Questions types to focus on one or two sections of the news to help develop intensive listening skills.
6 Decide on ONE topic in the news recording that you think is interesting and make a few suggestions on how you might develop it with ESL class.

Part I
Hi, William, it’s your friend Kevin! I thought about calling you last night but I considered it unfair because it was late at night and probably you had a busy day. I feel wasted this morning after the night out party. I left the club at 4 o’clock this morning. I feel the party was refreshing and gave good unwinding moments.
On Wednesday I travel to San Francisco. We drove to the Hollywood Belmonte but the journey was tedious due to the traffic congestion and less police traffic to control movement. However, despite the long journey, it was an amazing day. Later in the evening, the worst happened, the LGBT group sympathizers were on the road protesting for equal right. The demonstration was however peaceful and the organizers seemed to be rational. People who were on the streets showed solidarity with the demonstrators. My plans for that evening were therefore disrupted. The next day I left to North Carolina and due to the long journey, I listened to hip hop songs to give myself company and to avoid the paying attention to the news. This being an electioneering year, campaigns news were flying all over and false promises air without consideration.
The sight of street families reduced my hunger as I was left sympathizing and questioning why the government, community and other policymakers are blind to the disadvantage. The scene of the poor state of living puzzled me to ask who fault, government or God. William, I am still questioning why God gives a lot to some and nothing to others.
From North Carolina, I left to California. I liked the fresh air in the state due to minimal pollution and orderly waste disposal. The vehicles moved in an orderly man and it seems everyone in this part of the world had morals and ethics. I bought a souvenir from Buy Mall. The businesses in this region were rather busy and congested. I enjoyed the customer relation in the mall and the efficiency in service delivery.
Tomorrow I am flying to Caribbean Island to enjoy the sandy beaches. I remember out English teacher was there and he narrated the nice experience one get within these islands. The teacher told us that ornaments and cheap in this part of the world so I will buy one at nearly half the price. It is time to alight from the bus so I will say goodbye. I will keep updating you.
Topics which should be highlighted in the extensive listening
Politics, business, environmental pollution, integrity in leadership, work ethics, social stratification, customer relation, the plight of the street family, entertainment and sexual orientation.
Question to training intensive listening abilities
- The place I visited in the right order
- What happened in San Francisco
- Which events and sights disturbed my moods
- Why did I develop an attraction to California
- What did I listen to and why, where was I coming from and where was I headed to during this time
Sexual orientation
To foster good relationship to LGBT and to have a social inclusivity which is least depended on sexual orientation the topic can be developed in ESL by including units of social justice, identity, diversity, and tolerance. Another measure to develop sexual orientation is by curriculum developers incorporating the sexual matter in the education to create an awareness. Incorporation of sexual identity (Crookes, 2013).
