My Worldview Inventory
According to Moorman (2015), “worldview” articulates to the central basis of reality that entails the assumptions, categories, and values, that is shared by various communities or cultures, in which people view the world from multiple perspectives. Each and every person tend to view the world from a different point of view; I am no exception. Nevertheless, a group of individuals such as a family or a community can have a similar worldview. This paper transcends an inventory of my personal worldview as well as reviews my understanding of spirituality, pluralism, scientism, and postmodernism.
First, spirituality entails a series of activities where individuals seek the true meaning of a sacred being, rather an experience of one’s inner dimension. It is a proven fact that spirituality has an effect on the worldview of individuals, as such; it is a crucial component to consider holistically in the intervention process as a healthcare professional (Pullen, McGuire, Farmer, & Dodd, 2015). Hindrances to spirituality have been derived from the packed functions of medical care in that these hindrances are imitative from the theoretical concepts of postmodernism and scientism. From my personal perspective, I believe that my faith has an impact on my worldview as a Christian despite the fact that I have a rich background and expertise in science. Furthermore, my background in science shows the capability for a pluralistic association.
In an analysis of spirituality, it is imperative to note that it involves an individual perception of the beliefs and norms that relate to their connection with the meaning of life as well as others in a broad-spectrum. Spirituality primarily recoils itself to the various forms, though this research does not dwell merely on the religious impact, rather it purports that spirituality as an essential and efficient holistic intervention as well as treatment of a patient. Over time, religion and spirituality have been neglected in the medical field since the spirituality of patients and history are not considered in the conversations. For better treatment and intervention process, spiritual aspects are vital as they have unwavering influences on the worldview of some patients in context. Puchalski (2013) postulates that spirituality is actively associated with the improved adaptation skills, decreased mortality rates, and increase in patient recovery.
Spirituality has been immune from the medical field as a result of the philosophical concepts of postmodernism and scientism. Nevertheless, Sorell (2013) accounts that the philosophical thought of scientism articulates that if knowledge of a given aspect was not acquired since then, the knowledge is viewed as vague and fallacious. Alternatively, Bresler (2013) suggests that postmodernism focusses on the significance of communication, power relationships, and personalization in the configuration of truth and worldviews. Proponents of postmodernism have a belief that the reality does not exist, as such, they phrase it as “ethical values or morals.” This analogy keeps away the role of complete understanding, reason, and the sagacity of science. Therefore these philosophical thoughts subdue spirituality as they refute pluralism. Kirschner (2006) suggests that pluralism is the mobile reception or acceptance of diversity in beliefs and practices. Hence, the two concepts have undermined the ethical reasoning in humans. I accept as true that a fraction of the these philosophical thoughts can interrelate to activate the spirituality of a patient as well as contribute wholly on their worldview. For example, accepting the vitality of the role of science or spirituality in healthcare.
Sire (2009) formulates seven questions that an individual can use to evaluate their worldview. First, he asks “What is real in the world?” as a definition of prime reality. My prime reality entails that I truly believe in God and his existence. Second, he asks individuals on how they recognize the temperament of the world around them. I reply to this, as a Christian, I believe in the biblical creation stories that God created man, the universe, heavens, and earth. Also, as a nurse practitioner, I believe in the evolution theory. Third, Sire asks individuals to define a human being. I hold a belief that human being is God’s image. From the dynamics of evolution, I can assert that man came from apes. Additionally, I stand to agree that people are unique, complex and living creatures who breathe and are emotional as well as capable of doing good or evil. Fourth, Sire asks individuals of their perceptions on what happens to individuals after death. My Christian faith influences me in a way to believe that there is life after death. Additionally, I consider that people will be judged for their wrongdoings or sins to determine whether their souls will go to heaven or hell. Also, I reflect in the existence of eternal peace after death. Furthermore, I assert that the life on earth is an evaluation of having a peaceful afterlife.
Sire continues asking if one can know it all. In response to this query, I have a belief that it is individual must be contented and expected to know what they have discovered since as a Christian I know that God is all-knowing and he has given the man an opportunity to figure out the the unkonwn in life. Another critical question that Sire outlines are entails whether one can distinguish right from wrong. Being a Christian, the Bible teaches us that on what is considered right or wrong, sin or evil. Lastly, Sire tries to know how a person can determine his worldview by asking, “What is human history?” I can approach this question and say that “human history” is a test process, the way one carries out activities ever since they were born until they die.
I am a proponent of pluralism since my worldview lies
between the scientific and Christian perspectives. As such, pluralism must be
practiced in healthcare to promote subsistence of spirituality and science in a
broad concept. Healthcare professionals must treat a patient holistically for
better treatment outcomes since some research suggest that a consideration of
spirituality has demonstrated significant effects on the healing process.
