You will select a corporate or organizational leader who could be a personal role model. The professional self-assessment taken during the course will be the lens through which you will select this leader. You will research the leader’s professional career track, management and leadership styles, team-building skills, organizational vision and culture, and problem-solving and conflict-management abilities. You will then compare aspects of your own leadership style to the leadership style of the person you selected. The leadership and management of a business or organization must have a strong mission and vision and be able to communicate this information well.
Analyze the results of your self assessment and then focus on your chosen leader, analyzing his or her career track and explaining what impact his or her leadership skills had on the organization and how the leader’s management style helped him or her accomplish goals.
Specifically, the following critical elements must be addressed:
I. Self-Assessment
A. With your focus on leadership, analyze the results of your professional self-assessment. In your analysis, make sure to consider your strengths, areas for development, and your skills, abilities, and tendencies. You could also consider results such as your communication and team-building styles.
B. Briefly compare and contrast your self-assessment results to the leadership characteristics of the leader you selected. In other words, what skills and abilities does the leader have that you also have? What skills and abilities does the leader have that you do not?
II. Leadership and Management
A. Analyze the leader’s professional career track and growth, focusing specifically on the leader’s management roles and functions. How are the leader’s leadership skills and abilities different from the management roles and functions he or she fulfilled?
B. What impact did the leader’s leadership skills have on his or her ability to improve organizational structure, operations, and communication?
C. What impact did the leader’s management roles and functions have on his or her ability to improve organizational structure, operations, and communications?
Solution
Leadership and Management Skills – Self-Evaluation: Personal Role Model – Denise M. Morrison
Effective leadership and management requires one to have numerous professional and soft skills. After a professional self-assessment, the identification of my strengths and weaknesses depicted various skills and competencies that place me at an elevated level as a competent leader/manager. The assessment made me realize that I am self-assured, responsible, and an analytical, creative, self-confident, and hardworking person. Additionally, I have the ability to build strong relationships, and I possess excellent communication skills, diplomacy, initiative, and an edge for quality work. However, due to my keenness and attention to detail, I sometimes find it difficult to allocate and manage time effectively as I try to perfect everything. As such, I need to focus on developing this area alongside the skill of motivating and inspiring other people.
Learning from my personal role model, Denise Morrison, would assist me in the constant enhancement of my leadership and soft skills. Morrison is an efficient leader and manager, with multiple excellent skills that have allowed her achieve organizational and personal success as the CEO of Campbell Soup Company. Some of the skills that enable her to lead and manage effectively include excellent communication, team-building skills, the ability to solve organizational problems efficiently, time-management excellence, and the risk-taking. While I have not developed excellence in time-management, corporate problem solving, and risk-taking, I share multiple skills with Morrison. She shows initiative, attention to detail, self-confidence, and an edge for quality work all of which align well with the organizational and management roles of the Campbell Soup Company (Forbes, 2016).
The
possession of the mentioned leadership skills and competencies have allowed Morrison
to propel the company towards success. As the CEO, she applies a goal-driven
approach in the management of the company to promote quality improvement,
enhanced productivity and performance, and most importantly, increased
profitability (Forbes, 2013). For instance, between
2011 and 2013, the company recorded a 2% and 7% in net sales of simple meals
and EBIT respectively. Additionally, the company now offers and promotes more
than 50 new products compared to the three products it offered in 2010 (Forbes, 2016). The skills and
ambition she possesses played and continue to serve a significant role in the
process. Learning from her excellence will enable me enhance my skills and
develop areas of weakness. I believe this will be critical for the achievement
of personal and professional success.
