Summary
Abortion – a matter of human rights and social justice (n.d) argues that abortion is a matter of social justice and human rights. According to the site, a person has a right to safe abortion, determining if she wants to be a parent, and healthy sexuality. Abortion being made illegal increases unsafe abortions rather than reducing abortions. Abortion is extremely safe in countries that have legalized abortion. According to World Health Organization (WHO), almost 50% of all the abortions performed each year are normally illegal and unsafe. Unfortunately, a good portion of the 50% are usually rural low-income women. Most of them even end up dying due to the side effects of unsafe abortion. These deaths and unnecessary harms can be reduced through legalizing abortion. Most parts of the world either ban abortion or allow it only when a life has to be saved. These restrictive measures on abortion infringe women’s human rights according to the agreement made at United Nation’s International conference held in Cairo. Every country should therefore legalize abortion.
Introduction
Imagine living in a
world where women terminate pregnancies whenever they want and can never be
questioned. What will happen to those who are married and decide to terminate
pregnancies whenever they have misunderstanding? Will young women practice
protected sex? These are some of the questions that would run in someone’s mind
when legalizing abortion is mention. USA is among the few countries that have
been advocating for killing unborn babies. To them, an unborn baby is not a
human being that deserves protection under human rights provisions. The
legalization is hidden behind protection of a person from impending health
risks – psychological, emotional, familial, age etc. However, the mentioned
risks create more loopholes for more illegal abortions. Since one only needs
approval from one doctor, some of the risks can be faked just to get rid of
pregnancy. Consequently, reasons behind legalizing abortion are not strong
enough to warrant it. For instance, Judge Mark Horner argues that denying abortion
to victims of rape violates human rights laws (Milligan, 2015). With this, one
would ask, what happened to humanity? Destroying a human at the expense of the
rights of another human is not human right, it is destruction. Abortion is not
a matter of human rights and should not be legalized.
