Summary of the Article
The article stipulates how the Magnet Recognition Program is now utilizing the caring theory and science leadership in its model for some healthcare facilities. The authors’ main agenda is focused on the need for “theory-guided’ practice for the nursing profession. As such she suggests that the current leaders within the healthcare industry must be able to measure their effectiveness of their professional activities. The authors attribute the need for theoretical comprehensive and empirical data as a measure to evaluate the performance of the acts of caring, beyond solving the problem.
Considering this, the Watson Caritas Patient Score (WCPS) postulated by Jean Watson, a founder of the Theory of Human Caring and Caring Science, is must be used in advanced professional nursing practice to measure clinical indicators of caring about the patient’s outcome. The article states that current research, International Watson Caritas Comparative Database, coordinated by DR. Barbara Brewer uses the WCPS five-item tool that focuses on the building of accurate as well as reliable data comparative data which in turn will aid in the constant performance improvement and medical investigations. Additionally, the article states that the comparative data will be useful in improving the validity as well as the reliability of the WCPS. This tool is used to measure the perceptions of patients as per the care offered to them by healthcare professionals. The article specifies further that traditional instruments did not measure the transpersonal connections between patients and nurses. As such, WCPS would show how human kindness and attention that health care professional give patients to meet the fundamental obligations of dignity, trust, faith consideration and conducive environment that promotes health. Overall, the article recommends nurses on the need to use empirical data from patients through the use of WCPS to know how well the patient feels for better interventions.
